Tennyson 205 by Studio Rick Joy in Polanco, Mexico City, Mexico. A five-storey apartment building uses planted light wells to make an inward urban site feel more open.
Research notes
A five-storey apartment building uses planted light wells to make an inward urban site feel more open.
Daylight within a constrained block
Tennyson 205 is surrounded by neighboring buildings on three sides in Polanco. Studio Rick Joy arranged three planted light wells within the block so that the lower floors have an outdoor connection as well as the street-facing facade. This is an apartment building, rather than a single detached house.
A vertical sequence of outdoor spaces
Compare the light wells, covered patios and upper terrace instead of reading the exterior as one uninterrupted mass. These spaces introduce different degrees of shelter and openness across the levels. Surface textures also change with the direction of light, making close interior photographs a useful companion to the wider street views.
