Reading the collection

An expressive building can suggest imagined futures while responding to very practical demands. These museums, towers and transport buildings offer unusual relationships between structure, circulation and enclosure. The edited selection introduces built architectural ideas; the wider catalogue may also include proposals. a science-fiction resemblance is not a claim that a building appeared in a film.

Chengdu’s museum organizes movement beside a lake, while Shanghai Astronomy Museum turns light and the sky into parts of the visit. Morpheus and Leeza SOHO use the space between vertical elements to connect shared interiors. Daxing organizes a large terminal around a central point.

Look for the organizing diagram behind a striking silhouette. Structure, an underground constraint or the demands of a visitor route can explain more than the resemblance to a spacecraft. For documented screen appearances, explore the separate cinema research.

What organizes the form?

Look for a route, structural idea or site constraint that explains the building’s geometry.

Is it a real filming location?

An appearance of futuristic architecture is different from a documented film credit. The cinema pages keep that evidence separate.
