Tropical houses: shaded edges, gardens & outdoor living

Reading the collection

Tropical houses can make their sheltered edges as important as their enclosed rooms. Terraces, planted courts and the relationship between a roof and an opening are useful starting points for discovery. This collection looks at those spatial arrangements rather than assuming that visible greenery proves environmental performance.

At Dolphin Villa in Hanoi, compare the stacked rooms and planted terraces. Cornwall Gardens in Singapore offers another starting point for considering how gardens can be integrated with domestic space. Follow the actual uses, circulation and openings in the published photographs.

The wider selection follows the tropical theme in the catalogue. Ventilation, cooling, water use and maintenance require evidence beyond a photograph; they should not be read as measured benefits of every featured design.

Where does sheltered living happen?

Look for occupied edges: a covered terrace or outdoor room can reveal more about daily use than an empty exterior view.

What needs maintenance?

Planting, shade devices and exposed surfaces change over time. Look for documented explanations rather than assuming that a new photograph shows long-term performance.
