Research notes

A renovation and extension reorient an existing house toward its gardens, the sky and changes in ground level.

Reworking an existing house

Alain Carle's NORM Residence is located on Montréal's western island edge. The design revisits a house whose original arrangement had a limited relationship to its site. New and altered volumes use openings in different positions to reconnect the interior with nearby landscape elements.

A sequence of distinct views

Instead of reading every window as the same panoramic gesture, compare the view toward the garden with those directed toward ground or sky. The sloping roofs and differences in height give the rooms varied proportions. These spatial distinctions help explain the renovation beyond its consistent pale interior palette.
