Research notes
A vaulted retreat places the feeling of shelter beneath an earth-covered form at the center of its architecture.
A room beneath a new hill
HW Studio's Morelia residence is set into a wooded landscape. Its long vault defines the interior and the relationship to the ground above. The project is best understood in section, where the covered domestic space and surrounding terrain can be read together.
An entrance framed by walls
The approach passes between concrete walls before entering the more sheltered rooms. At the living spaces, substantial glazing turns attention back toward the trees. Compare that change from a narrow arrival to a broad view with the continuous curve overhead: enclosure and openness are deliberately experienced in sequence.
